![]() Maybe a little fingerpicking, but nothing fancy. I've gone to many open mics, and that's all I've ever done is strummed chords and sung. Long winded way of saying, you're golden with strumming and singing, that's what most people will be doing and that's what most listeners will gravitate toward, as well. It was cool as hell for those of us that can't do stuff like that yet but background noise for most of the patrons. One guy did a flawless cover of Mike Dawes' instrumental of "Somebody That I Used to Know" and you could tell who the players were because it was crickets aside from a few of the other performers that were really impressed by the technicality and accuracy. ![]() Lots of people in the crowd that aren't musicians themselves truly don't appreciate some of the technical wizardry that really accomplished players bring. Vocals carry the day at any open mic I've been to in the past. While there were some incredibly talented and experienced guitarists there (and a Mando player, which was kind of awesome) the folks doing the strumming and singing really pulled the most attention. It was my second open mic and I'm very much in the keep it simple stage of performing. My guy, I literally just did this last night and got big love from the crowd. Like if I went on and just did the intro to Blister in the Sun then sang & strummed the rest, would that be totally lame? Should I learn the solo, all the flourishes? Should I try to make it my own if I’m doing a cover? Or is THAT annoying? Lol, lots of questions that I realize dont really matter but I’m curious and nervous and having a little extra info helps keep me focused and relaxed.Īnyways my questions will probably be answered after going to one, but I figured I’d ask in advance as well. So my main question is, is it annoying-or worse, totally unremarkable-for someone to get up and just strum the chords and sing? I’m not great at like solos or just throwing in riffs/fills while playing, but I feel like getting up and just strumming and singing is kinda boring so idk what to focus on. Of course I’m not amazing, as I imagine most first timers aren’t, but I’m not sure what like the standard to meet is I guess. ![]() Thinking of trying an open mic, and I obviously plan to go and watch a few first, but I wanted to start practicing now to really get a handful of songs down for when I get on stage.
